For Christmas, John gave me this coffee mug.
It’s a fair warning. In the last month, I’ve googled daggers vs swords, and how to sharpen a sword blade.
Poisoning.
Torture.
How bruises change color over the days.
Alternative medical treatments for deep lacerations.
Here are a few of my actual search requests:
- rome ancient arrest interrogation crime
- colony duumvir ancient rome imperium death
- stripped flogged and beheaded
- death of timothy pagan ephesus clubs
- roman prisoner chained wrist ankle
- is a duovir allowed to impose a death sentence
- how to soften leather belt
It could look a little scary if you didn’t know me.
Maybe scarier if you did.

On the plus side, I’ve learned a lot of new words, mostly latin. I’ve done extensive research on these topics. Anybody know what any of them are— without looking them up?
- ordo
- decurion
- tigellinus
- lorica musculata
- phelenon
- duovir
It might be fairly obvious my next book will be set in New Testament times instead of Old. I’ll have more news about that in the weeks to come.
In the meantime, I’ll just keep learning about dungeons, betrayal, murder, and mayhem. And hope no one looks too seriously at my laptop.
