Acsah is the only daughter of Caleb, Israel’s most famous warrior and spy. She has three older brothers from Caleb’s first wife, all of whom have married and moved away from Hebron. She is fiercely independent, taking after her father, who has raised her alone from the time she was young after her mother died. Although she loves her father dearly, she does not want to marry a warrior like him, since she feels he was never home. She’s getting close to the age when she would be considered unmarriageable.
Othniel, called Othni, is the son of Caleb’s brother Kenaz. Old enough to join the fighting when Israel first entered Canaan, he fought under Caleb until a grievous mistake caused him to leave and fight in the north. He’s been gone for nearly six years, and both his parents died while he was away. He’s loved Acsah since they were children together.
Caleb was one of the twelve spies Moses sent into Canaan, and one of the only two–along with Joshua–who believed God when he said the Israelites could conquer Canaan. Now 85 and with a permanent limp, he is done fighting and is seeking a commander to lead the Israelites against the giants in Kiriath-Sepher.
Enosh is a successful and competent captain, and one of Caleb’s favorites. He is tall, well-built and cocky. He would love to win Acsah, but because he feels he deserves her, not because he loves her.
Seraiah–called Siah–is Othniel’s younger, more care-free brother. He is tall and lanky with a ready smile, and both admires and loves his big brother. He loves to tease Othni about Acsah.
Dania is Enosh’s younger sister. With both parents gone, he has complete authority over her, which he loves to exert.
