According to some studies, those who survive a childhood in an orphanage can be 10 times more likely to be involved in prostitution; 40 times more likely to get a criminal record.
A 2002 Russian case study followed approximately 15,000 Russian orphans who aged out of the system at 16 to 18 years old. Two years after, around 3,000 had committed crime, and roughly half of the girls had been forced into prostitution.

Dariga Nazarbayeva, politician and daughter of President of Kazakhstan, says most of the children raised in orphanages in Kazakhstan turn to prostitution or crime. “The children that are raised in orphanages are not ready for the adult and independent life when they grow up and leave. The orphanages cripple their souls and make them even unhappier. 70 percent of the boys raised in this system end up in jail and 60 percent of girls turn to prostitution.”
