Orphans lose all support—emotional, financial, and more. They often go to work to pay for basic needs, not only for themselves but sometimes for younger siblings, which means they must drop out of school.
Nearly eight out of ten orphans in Burkina Faso have dropped out of school. In Zambia, the number of children who do not attend school rising at an alarming rate—30% to 40% of orphans do not go to school. More than one thousand teachers die of AIDS each year as well, making it impossible to train new ones fast enough.
