This week was spring break at our house, so we took a couple days and drove up to Philadelphia. We did the standard tourist stops—Independence Hall, Congress Hall, the Liberty Bell.
I was again reminded that the Liberty Bell is inscribed with Scripture (something that surely would never be allowed today). Leviticus 25:10, “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.”
Obviously the inscription refers to political liberty, but on this Good Friday, I am reminded of the only true liberty we can ever have—freedom from the grip of sin. On this day a couple thousand years ago, the sinless Son of God gave His life as payment for our—my—many sins, so that we could not only live eternally with Him after this life is over, but enjoy a victorious life here on earth. His resurrection three days later, His glorious triumph over death, allows us to escape the bondage of sin and death.
And that is a liberty that truly needs to be proclaimed, today and always.
