The More Things Change

Gray Rotary Telephone

How many of you remember the song “Sylvia’s Mother” by Dr. Hook?

It was never one of my favorite songs, but I heard it on the 70s channel the other day and was struck by the first line:

Sylvia’s mother says, ‘Sylvia’s busy
Too busy to come to the phone’

Wow. Talk about dated. How many things in that line no longer apply?

  • With nearly everyone having a cell phone these days, no one has to go through the parents to talk to the kids.
  • With cell phones nearly practically attached to their hands, kids don’t have to “come” to the phone anymore.
  • More than one person in a house can be on the phone at the same time, and you don’t have to have a conversation in the living room (or kitchen) where everyone can hear you.

It made me think about how much has changed, even in just a few years. Technology becomes almost obsolete in months. People come and go from our lives. The DMV slang my kids use changes so fast I literally can’t understand them half the time. And what’s “acceptable “in society today — I almost give up on trying to keep up with that.

It also made me incredibly thankful that Jesus never changes.

At least 14 times, God promises we will never be alone. He will always be with us.

Genesis 28:15   Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

Deuteronomy 20:1   When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

Deuteronomy 20:4  For the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.

Deuteronomy 31:6   Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Deuteronomy 31:8   The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Joshua 1:5   No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

Joshua 1:9  Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 10:25  And Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. For thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.”

1 Chronicles 28:20  Then David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.

Isaiah 41:10  Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Matthew 28:20  …teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

John 14:18  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

Romans 8:39   Nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Hebrews 13:5  Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
